How many hours of basketball do children need?
There is no single number for every child. Age, current ability, club and representative commitments, games, physical development, sleep, school and injury history all matter.
About the NBA and USA Basketball guidelines
The NBA and USA Basketball guidelines shown below are general participation and workload guidelines designed to reduce the risk of overuse injuries, burnout and excessive organised basketball.
They should not be interpreted as the optimal amount of training required for a child to make strong and consistent basketball progress.
The figures include all organised basketball activities, such as team practices, Rep training, club training, structured coach-led skills sessions and games. However, attending these activities does not necessarily mean that a child is receiving sufficient individual skill-development coaching.
NBA/USA Basketball General Participation Guideline
| Age | General practice guideline | General game guideline | Maximum organised basketball | Rest days |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ages 7–8 | 1 × 30–60 min | 1 per week | 3 hours/week | At least 2/week |
| Ages 9–11 | 2 × 45–75 min | 1–2 per week | 5 hours/week | At least 2/week |
| Ages 12–14 | 2–4 × 60–90 min | 2 per week | 10 hours/week | At least 1/week |
| Grades 9–12 | 3–4 × 90–120 min | 2–3 per week | 14 hours/week | At least 1/week |
SHIN FITNESS Practical Training Recommendation
Based on my long-term coaching experience, children aged 9–11 generally need at least three days of quality basketball training per week to develop their fundamentals, physical coordination, decision-making and basketball IQ consistently.
Two scheduled training days are often not enough. Children may miss sessions because of illness, school events, family commitments, transport difficulties or holidays. When one of two weekly sessions is missed, the child is effectively training only once that week.
If this pattern continues, the child often spends each session relearning previous skills instead of progressing to the next stage.
SHIN FITNESS training is not two continuous hours of high-intensity physical work. Session content and intensity vary and can include technical instruction, demonstrations, individual correction, controlled repetitions, decision-making work, shooting, breaks and lower-load skill development. Because the physical demand is not identical every day, attending more frequently does not automatically mean excessive high-intensity loading.
For new players, especially during approximately the first six months, training frequency should be increased progressively while the coach observes coordination, fitness, attitude and recovery. A child should rest or reduce training when there is significant muscle soreness, unusual muscular fatigue, pain, illness or another clear sign that recovery is needed.
After approximately six months of consistent training, many children are sufficiently adapted to attend SHIN FITNESS every day when they are physically well. The child’s response still matters, but daily attendance is not considered a problem simply because the sessions occur on consecutive days.
School holiday recommendation
For members who genuinely want to improve, SHIN FITNESS recommends attending every day during school holidays whenever possible. Club and Rep programs commonly stop during these periods, so the holidays provide an important opportunity to build skills, coordination, basketball IQ and training habits without losing continuity.
What “Quality Training” Means
In this article, quality or recommended training does not simply mean attending club training, Rep training, school basketball, games or casual basketball.
It means structured, coach-led development training where the coach consistently observes, teaches and corrects each child’s:
Movement and technique
- Footwork
- Running and stopping technique
- Balance and body control
- Ball-handling
- Passing
- Shooting mechanics
Understanding and habits
- Decision-making
- Court awareness
- Basketball IQ
- Training habits and effort
Many club and Rep programs have different priorities. Team practices often focus on team structure, plays, competition and preparing for games.
These environments can provide valuable team and game experience, but in many cases there is limited time to repeatedly teach and correct each child’s individual fundamentals.
Gold Coast club, Rep and SHIN FITNESS compared
The following comparison describes the common structure I have personally observed in the basketball environment on the Gold Coast. Individual teams and associations can vary.
The local club program has both summer and winter seasons, so the club calendar spans the year. This does not mean training and games run continuously: both stop completely during every school holiday.
| Program | Typical weekly structure | School holidays | Coaching structure | Main value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Local club | Summer and winter seasons; 1 × 60-minute practice plus 1 game each week while sessions are running | No practices and no games | Commonly parent volunteers; experience varies | Team participation, community and game experience |
| Representative | 2 × 90-minute practices, plus 1–2 games, during an approximately four-month season | No practices and no games | Can include parent or volunteer coaches and former Rep players; individual development experience varies | Selected-team competition and team systems |
| SHIN FITNESS | Three days is the practical minimum; four or five days can be appropriate; daily attendance is possible after gradual adaptation | Daily attendance is recommended for serious members when physically well | Professional coach directly supervises and corrects players throughout training | Individual skills, decision-making, fitness, discipline and consistent development |
Rep season length and cost
In the representative program on which this comparison is based, the season lasts approximately four months and the family cost is around AUD $2,000 for that season.
My assessment: I consider approximately AUD $2,000 to be an extremely high cost for a program lasting only about four months. This is my professional opinion about value and affordability, not a claim about every representative program. Fees and inclusions can change and may vary between teams and seasons, so parents should confirm the current published information before registering.
The weekly calculations
Local club practice:
One game is then added separately. The exact total depends on game duration, warm-up and time on court.
Representative practice:
180 minutes ÷ 60 = 3 hours of practice per week
One or two games are then added. Rep therefore creates more team basketball time than local club, but that does not guarantee continuous individual skill correction.
SHIN FITNESS three-session example:
This amount is not appropriate for every age group. A player’s club practices, Rep practices and games must be added before deciding how many SHIN FITNESS sessions are suitable.
Representative selection is not the same as player development
Rep is a selection-based team program. Selection can provide competition and team experience, but being selected does not automatically prove that a player has complete fundamentals, receives professional individual coaching or has greater long-term potential than a player who was not selected.
My professional observation on the Gold Coast
Returning Rep players can have an advantage in future selections because coaches already know their history, role and team fit. Physical size, previous Rep history, current performance and familiarity or relationships within the local system can influence opportunities.
This can make entry harder for new players and late-developing athletes. This is an observation from my coaching experience and does not claim that every team or association uses exactly the same selection process.
A selection result is one decision at one point in time. It is not a complete measurement of a child’s work ethic, learning ability, future growth or potential.
What happens during school holidays?
In the Gold Coast club and Rep programs described above, there are no practices and no games during school holidays. The programs stop completely during those periods.
Club has summer and winter seasons and therefore spans the year on the calendar. However, because school holidays occur several times each year, the repeated shutdowns add up to a substantial amount of time without organised club or Rep basketball. In practical player-development terms, this creates a large cumulative off-season even though club has two seasons.
SHIN FITNESS training is available every day, all year, including every school holiday. The benefit is continuity: players can keep working on skills, fitness, decision-making and training habits instead of stopping completely.
Match the training schedule to the player’s goal
Beginner
Build movement quality, coordination, ball handling, shooting fundamentals and listening habits. Keep sessions age-appropriate and enjoyable.
Club or Rep player
Add focused skills coaching only after counting team practices and games. Extra training should solve a specific development need.
Serious older player
Use a consistent weekly plan for skills, game play, strength, conditioning and recovery without exceeding age-appropriate total load.
Frequently asked questions
How many times per week should a child practise basketball?
The NBA and USA Basketball figures are general participation and workload guidelines, not an optimal skill-development prescription. Based on SHIN FITNESS coaching experience, children aged 9–11 who want consistent progress generally need at least three days of quality training per week, while total organised basketball and recovery are managed.
Does club, Rep or game participation automatically count as quality training?
No. These activities can provide valuable team and competition experience, but quality development training also requires consistent individual observation, teaching, repetition and correction of fundamentals.
Is one club practice per week enough to improve?
It can support participation and team experience, but many players require additional age-appropriate skill repetition to improve shooting, handling, footwork and decision-making.
Does Rep selection prove that a player has complete skills?
No. Rep selection is a team selection decision at one point in time. It does not completely measure fundamentals, future potential, work ethic or access to professional individual coaching.
Can children attend SHIN FITNESS five days per week or every day?
Yes. Three days is the practical minimum, not the maximum. Four or five days per week can be appropriate, and many children can attend daily after approximately six months of gradual adaptation. SHIN FITNESS sessions vary in intensity, so consecutive attendance does not mean two hours of maximum physical loading every day.
Does SHIN FITNESS train during school holidays?
Yes. SHIN FITNESS trains every day throughout school holidays. Members who genuinely want to improve are encouraged to attend every day when physically well, while resting for significant soreness, muscular fatigue, pain or illness.
How long is the Rep season and how much does it cost?
In the representative program on which this comparison is based, the season lasts approximately four months and costs families around AUD $2,000. Fees and inclusions can vary, so parents should confirm current published information before registering.
Does local club basketball run all year?
The local club program described here has summer and winter seasons, so its calendar spans the year. However, practices and games stop completely during every school holiday, creating substantial periods without organised club basketball.
Sources and methodology
The age-based participation and workload figures in this article come from official NBA and USA Basketball youth guidelines. They are presented as general health, participation and total-load guidance, not as an optimal skill-development prescription. The SHIN FITNESS recommendation of at least three quality training days per week for ages 9–11 is based on Shinsuke Koshida’s long-term coaching experience. The Gold Coast club, Rep and SHIN FITNESS comparison is based on his direct coaching experience and the common local structures he has observed.
The approximately four-month season and approximately AUD $2,000 cost refer only to the representative program on which this comparison is based. They are not presented as the duration or fee for every association, team or season. Families should confirm current official fees, inclusions and dates directly with the relevant program.
